The Rebbe's Prophecy is coming true in 5771

32 years ago, on Motzei Shabbos Ki Tissa, the Lubavitcher Rebbe said: "Saudi Arabia is faltering, Egypt is faltering, and all of the Arab regimes around Saudi Arabia are faltering."

In past weeks protests have broken out in Egypt, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Algeria, Yemen, Lebanon, Syria and Jordan.


The Rebbe traces unrest in the Modern Middle East to the rebellion of the people against dictatorships. Dictators who amass national wealth for themselves and who invest in elaborate armies end up watching their weaponry fall into the hands of the people. Today, as documented extensively by the press, this nahafochu - switching of power - has been accentuated by social networks such as Facebook and Twitter which reverse the power dynamic and empower the people's will against the rule of the few.

The Rebbe compares this situation to the situation of Persia in the time of Esther, when the king similarly amassed for himself great power, only to discover a plot within his own ranks to oust him. Like the Purim story, which ended with the triumph of the Jewish people against the greatest of their enemies, the Rebbe prays that the instability of the Arab world will today too lead us to the end of our exile and the coming of Mashiach, may it be so, speedily in our days.

The intensification of trends observed by the Rebbe in 1979, as evidenced by the recent toppling of Mubarak and transition to a temporary military regime on the way towards democratic reforms, and the spread of riots across the Arab world, most recently in Iran, Bahrain and Yemen, is a sign that the world events that precede redemption throughout the various cycles of the Jewish people are accelerating, and that we must keep our eyes out for the broader impacts on the Jewish people.

The essence of the Rebbe's message, in my view, is that the toppling of foreign dictators is not a bad thing (which many have pressed Israel to state publicly in unison with the world), and that the victory of the peoples' will over the rule of the few is a natural expression of the human aspiration to freedom and justice. What makes the phenomenon of the Arab world unique is the fact that this situation of several individuals at the top amassing wealth and political power has lasted this long, and that the transfer from a dictatorship to a democracy is a process which is characterized by a great degree of instability and transformation on all levels - which is surely to bring about a key opening for Israel's role in the Middle East in the world, may Hashem's will be revealed soon for all to see.

The following is my rough translation of the Rebbe's words, spoken at a hitva'adut 32 years ago.     It didn't only happen in the past, but in our days, in actuality, for this is the entire matter of what occurred in Persia and Media (ancient Iran): that he (the king) sat on the throne of his kingship and hired an entire army to guard him, and in addition took for himself vast wealth...
    And in this way the small countries around Saudi Arabia, who are also in a 'wild' state ('a vilder matzav'), that a number of people - one, two or three - receive from the people vast wealth for 'wild' things. And even if they say these are not 'wild' things - in any case it is not for the good of the rest of the country's population, and the population is a million or two million or three million more than those few individuals.
    Through this strategy they should have been able to safeguard for themselves this situation, in any case at least a little, but in reality: Persia (Iran) has not safeguarded themselves at all, and Saudia Arabia has not safeguarded themselves at all. The only thing they have safeguarded for themselves through it, is that they (the U.S.) sent weapons to Persia, which has now fallen into the hands of those who dethroned him, and some of it is already in Russia - but they are keeping this secret...
    [The Rebbe discusses oil in the Arab world] And now they have decided, after they signed on paper - that there is nothing to worry about. But the truth is that there is room to worry before singing, while signing, and after signing  - on paper! And there is no doubt about it - because they saw what is happening now in Persia, and they know that Saudia Arabia is wobbling, Egypt is wobbling, and all of the Arab regimes around Saudia Arabia are wobbling!
    ...May the destiny of 'Eternal joy on their heads' come true, because they stood in a way of 'with a high hand' even when they were in Egypt and in the borders of of exile, and 'in a straight posture' - 'rising up', and we will go in this way to meet Mashiach Tzidkeynu speedily in our days, actually, with joy and goodness of heart.

הנבואה מתממשת: מהפיכה שלטונית במדינות ערב

מתממשת תחזיתו-הנבואית של הרבי שליט"א מלך המשיח, מלפני 32 שנה: "..ערב הסעודית מתנדנדת, ומצרים מתנדנדת, וכן כל הנסיכויות שמסביב לערב הסעודית - מתנדנדות"! מצרים, תוניס, סעודיה, בחריין, אלג'יריה, תימן, לבנון, סוריה וירדן - זה רק ההתחלה...

...נשיא הדור, הרבי שליט"א מלך המשיח, כבר חזה מראש חדשות אלו, עוד לפני 32 שנה. להלן דבריו הק', שאמר במהלך התוועדות מוצאי ש"פ כי-תשא, אודות המצב דאז בארץ הקודש, בעקבות הסכם 'קעמפ דייויד'.

    זה לא היה רק בעבר - אלא גם בימינו ממש, אשר זהו כל הענין שהיה בפרס ומדי: אשר הוא ישב על מלכותו ושכר חיל שלם שישמור עליו, ויחד עם זה הוא שלשל לכיסו (לא בליונים כערב הסעודית, אבל) הון עצום

    ...ועל-דרך-זה במדינות הקטנות שמסביב לערב הסעודית - שגם בהם ישנו מצב "פראי" ("ווילדער מצב") שמספר אנשים - אחד שניים שלושה - מקבלים מהעם הון עצום עבור דברים "פראיים". ואפילו אם הם יאמרו שאין אלו דברים "פראיים" - בכל אופן אין זה לטובת שאר בני המדינה, ובני המדינה הם פי-מליון או שני מליון או שלושה מליון מאותם מספר אנשים.

    אשר לפ"ז היו צריכים להבטיח את-עצמם ממצב זה - עכ"פ במשהו - ולמעשה: בפרס לא הבטיחו את-עצמם כלל, וכן בערב הסעודית לא הבטיחו את-עצמם כלל. הדבר היחיד שהבטיחו את-עצמם על-ידו - ששלחו נשק לפרס, אשר נשק זה נפל עכשיו לרשותם של אלו שהדיחו אותו מכסאו, וחלק ממנו נמצא כבר ברוסיה - אלא שעושים מכך סוד 

    . . ויה"ר שמדברים אלו ייצא ענין של פועל - ענין של פועל אמיתי, ולא כפי שהם חושבים שכשיחליטו בינם לבין עצמם, בד' אמותם, שהמציאות צריכה להיות כך וכך - אזי יהיה נפט, ובפרט אשר זה שטוען שיש לו 'סמיכה' לרבנות צעק בפומבי שלארץ-ישראל יש כבר נפט ואין צורך להגיע למצרים, ולא לערב הסעודית, ולא לפרס - כי א"י אגרה נפט. 

    וכמדובר לעיל בארוכה, הוא לא התבייש להדפיס זאת אחר-כך בעיתון!

    וכעת החליטו - שמאחר וחתמו על נייר - אין מה לדאוג. אך האמת היא שיש מה לדאוג לפני החתימה, בשעת החתימה, ולאחר החתימה - על הנייר! וואין זה דבר שעומד בספק - מכיון שראו כעת מה קרה בפרס, וכן יודעים שערב הסעודית מתנדנדת, ומצרים מתנדנדת, וכן כל הנסיכויות שמסביב לערב הסעודית - מתנדנדות!

...ויקויים היעוד "ושמחת עולם על ראשם", מכיון שיעמדו באופן של "ביד רמה" - עוד בהיותם במצרים וגבולים של הגלות - ו"בקומה זקופה" - "קוממיות", ונלך באופן כזה לקבל פני משיח צדקנו במהרה בימינו ממש, בשמחה ובטוב לבב" (עד כאן הציטוט
